Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, the hilltop village
Perched on its hill above three valleys, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Its medieval lanes were even the setting for the film 'Chocolat' in 2000.

What to see and do
The lanes and fortified gates
Enter through the old Bourg gate, then wander among stone houses, gardens and viewpoints over the countryside.
Les Anis de Flavigny
The famous little aniseed sweets are made in the old abbey. The visit includes the Carolingian crypt, followed by a tasting.
The MuséoParc Alésia
Nearby, in Alise-Sainte-Reine, the site of the Battle of Alesia (52 BC) is presented in a modern visitor centre, with the statue of Vercingetorix on top of Mont Auxois.
Opening times change with the seasons: check before you go. Our favourite addresses (producers, restaurants, markets) are in the welcome book of every house.
Good to know
- The lanes are steep: wear comfortable shoes.
- Alesia and Flavigny combine perfectly in one day, ideal with children.
- Fontenay Abbey is about twenty minutes away.
