Époisses, a château and a cheese
In the Auxois countryside, Époisses is known worldwide for its cheese. But the village also has a remarkable moated château that is well worth a detour.

What to see and do
The Château d'Époisses
A medieval castle reshaped over the centuries, surrounded by moats and a double wall, with a large dovecote. Madame de Sévigné stayed here.
Époisses cheese
A soft, washed-rind cheese, washed with Marc de Bourgogne brandy and protected by an AOP label. Tasting it in the village, at the cheesemakers', is an experience.
The Auxois countryside
Hedgerows, Charolais cattle and quiet lanes: ideal for a bike ride or an evening stroll.
Opening times change with the seasons: check before you go. Our favourite addresses (producers, restaurants, markets) are in the welcome book of every house.
Good to know
- The château is mainly open in season: check opening days.
- Bring a cool bag if you want to take some cheese home!
