The Morvan: forests, lakes and fresh air
South of Avallon lies the Morvan, a range of forests, lakes and rivers protected as a Regional Nature Park since 1970. A paradise for hikers, anglers and anyone looking for peace and quiet.

What to see and do
The lakes
The Lac des Settons, the best known, has beaches and water sports in summer. Pannecière, Saint-Agnan and Chaumeçon are wilder.
Hiking
Hundreds of kilometres of waymarked trails, including the GR 13 and the Tour du Morvan, through forests, meadows and granite villages.
Quarré-les-Tombes
Around its church, the village has dozens of Merovingian stone coffins. An unusual place at the gateway to the Morvan.
The Park centre at Saint-Brisson
Everything about the Morvan: exhibitions, gardens, trails and the Museum of the Resistance in the Morvan.
Bibracte and Mont Beuvray
Further south, the former Gaulish capital of the Aedui can be visited, with its museum, in the middle of the forest.
Opening times change with the seasons: check before you go. Our favourite addresses (producers, restaurants, markets) are in the welcome book of every house.
Good to know
- Mobile coverage can be patchy: download your maps before you set off.
- The roads are beautiful but winding: allow plenty of time.
- Try the Morvan ham and, in season, mushrooms and bilberries.
