Vézelay, the eternal hill
High above the Cure valley, the basilica of Vézelay can be seen from miles around. The hill and its basilica have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and the village around them is worth taking your time over.

What to see and do
The Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene
A masterpiece of Romanesque art, with its great carved tympanum and a remarkably bright nave. Around the summer solstice, at noon, the sun draws a path of light down the middle of the nave.
The village and the ramparts
You walk up to the basilica along the main street, past old houses, galleries and cafés. Behind the basilica, the terrace looks out over the countryside, and the walk around the ramparts is lovely.
Vézelay wines
Vineyards surround the hill, especially around Saint-Père and Asquins. The white wines of the Vézelay appellation can be tasted directly at the winegrowers'.
Saint-Père and the Cure valley
At the foot of the hill, Saint-Père has a fine Gothic church and the Gallo-Roman site of Les Fontaines Salées. The Cure river is great for walks and canoeing in good weather.
On the Way of St James
Vézelay is the starting point of one of the great routes to Santiago de Compostela. You will often meet pilgrims, and a few kilometres along the way make a fine outing.
Opening times change with the seasons: check before you go. Our favourite addresses (producers, restaurants, markets) are in the welcome book of every house.
Good to know
- The street up to the basilica is steep: wear comfortable shoes.
- In summer, come early in the morning or late in the day: it is quieter and the light is beautiful.
- The basilica is also a place of worship: visits are silent during services.
